Shawn’s IT Tip of the Day – Microsoft Window’s 7

I’m not usually a fan of upgrading a PC until I’m forced to! ( you know when it dies) However for the start of the summer I purchased a new hard drive and a Copy of Windows 7 to try it out. Since then I have never looked back and can easy recommend Windows 7 to everyone.

Let me back up a little and tell you about Windows 7! If you purchased a computer in the past 5 years it was a computer with ”Windows XP”, or
The operating system we don’t like to talk about “Windows Vista”. At Coldwell Banker Kasey I had “Windows XP” on all my office computers and loved it!
I spent the past 2 years avoiding the Microsoft’s newest operating system Window’s Vista. Windows Vista isn’t bad, it’s just full of weird problems that have not been fixed by Microsoft.

Last year Microsoft came out with a new OS “Windows 7” after all the problems with Windows Vista. I was skeptical about a new OS. However as an IT guy I had to try it out and come to my own conclusion. Now several months later, I do recommend windows 7. I don’t recommend it because it is new and cool,
But manufactures are starting the encourage users to upgrade, by giving people a little push. The push is when stuff is no longer made for old computers! For example, when I upgraded to Microsoft Office 2010 It was not going to install on my old XP computers unless I upgraded to what is called service pack 3, also the new Internet Explorer 9 requires Windows 7. The problem this creates is when you go into a store to buy something for your PC, unless you’re running Vista or Windows 7, you might have to find out if it will work on your “old Windows XP computer”. The Benefits of Windows 7 are huge and I can write a book about them. Today’s tip is just a short tip on what’s happing in technology today and it’s a good time to plan for the future. Not to mention, if your computer is 5+ yrs. old it’s beginning to hit its end of life cycle.

My recommendation for the summer is to start budgeting for a new PC with Windows 7, and I might also recommend Microsoft office 2010 at the same time. I consider myself a penny pincher, but when you figure out how much time you spend wrestling with an old slow PC the upgrade can pay for itself in efficacy!

Gearing up for Endeavor's launch

It's been more than 45 years since Russia put the first man in space. So, space flights are nothing new.
But that doesn't make space exploration anything short of amazing. I still watch every shuttle launch with a little bit of wonder.
Today, the space shuttle Endeavor is blasting off on a new mission. It will deliver supplies and equipment to the International Space Station.
During the mission, crew members will make four space walks. They have to service parts of the station's solar arrays.
At NASA's site, you can learn more about tonight's launch. You can also watch NASA gear up for the launch.
But the fun won't be over today. NASA will Webcast all four space walks live! You—and your kids—won't want to miss that!

Heads-up regarding 19/23 (Interstate 26):
The North Carolina Department of Transportation will be closing both north bound lanes of US 19-23 (Future I-26 West) to repair the Aiken road bridge, which was damaged earlier this year by an accident. The road will be closed on the weekends of November 7-10, 14-17, and 21-23. The road will close on Friday afternoon at 8:00 PM and will reopen on Monday at 11:00 AM except for the weekend of November 21-23. On that weekend the road will reopen at midnight Sunday night the 23rd. Southbound traffic will not be affected during this closure. This work will all be contingent upon suitable weather. Please refer to: www.ncdot.org/doh/ and pick the road conditions tab for any updates.

Detour route is as follows:

Driving North on US 19/23 (Future I-26 West) traffic will take exit number 21, travel to bottom of ramp and free flow thru signal making a left turn onto SR 1882 (New Stock Road) and continue on New Stock Road to SR1727 (Monticello Road), free flow through this intersection and continue on Monticello road to its intersection with US 25-70. There will be an active traffic signal at this intersection. Turn right on US 25-70 go across bridge over US 19/23 (Future I-26 West) and turn left to on ramp for US 19/23 (Future I-26 West) and resume traveling on US 19/23 (Future I-26 West) at exit 19. All traffic traveling on US 19/23 Business will not be allowed to access New Stock Road. This is necessary to allow all the traffic from US 19/23 (Future I-26 West) to free flow through this intersection.

I just spent the weekend at the Hyatt hotel in Jacksonville, FL and the hotel was amazing. It had a Huge lobby, Big LCD's behind the front desk, Marble counters in the lobby and in the rooms. It was just an amazing hotel.However, in the meeting rooms they had the typical pen and paper, and I was very disappointedin the pens! It's a great hotel and then they give out cheap 5 cent pens! what a let down, and poor representation of an amazing hotel. It's like they ran out of money.My point is, when you speak, you may have great speech, but if you have dirt on your sleeve and don't tuck in your shirt it can effect your overall presentation.

They were the 1st real estate company to support social networking, and join FaceBook as a national company.

Over the weekend, April & Jamie ran the Asheville TW8K, (Thomas Wolf 8 K) and being a good husband I went to support my wife, and carry her home or to the hospital.

So sitting on the sidelines waiting, I decided to twitter the event from my Verizon Black Berry 8300, and thought what a great idea this was. Loved one's could sit at home and follow the race on twitter, and not have to brace the cold, wet Saturday.

better yet, maybe someone would pay me to twitter, or blog the event!

Asheville Citizen Times 5K

A week ago, saterday. I ran my 3rd 5K, in Down Town Asheville, and I was awesome!
I knocked close to 4 mins off my best time.

I ran my 1st 5K in 44 mins (Asheville Chamber Challenge)
My 2nd 5K (Weaverville) in 39 mins
My 3rd 5K (Asheville Citizen Times in 34 mins last Saturday!

what's next! I will Chear my wife on from the sidelines in her TW8K (Thompson Wolf 8 K) in a week.

I'm a 5 K Professional, and if I start running more then 5K's, I might get crazy and run
a 1/2 marathon! So to play it safe, it is 5K's or less.

the best part about the 5K last week, was there was also a 1/2 Marathon going on at the same time. So while ruining my 5K (3.1 miles) I would see signs for the "mile marker 13"! It made me feel better about myself, running the last stretch, knowing 3.1 miles is nothing, compared to the people running 13 miles! I don't even think I get 13 mile out of a gallon of Gas in My SUV!

Any who, I had a blast, and I look forward to my next 5 K, and running it in less then 30 mins.
29 min and 59 sec will be just fine.

How not to Grill, July 4th weekend

I was put in charge of the grill! Big Mistake!
they told me to check the food after 15 mins and I might need to flip them. This is what
the grill looked like when I came back after 15 mins!

I turned off the gas, ran in the house to get my camera and the fire was still going when I got back! after thowing water on the grill to get the fire out here is what the foor looked like. Can you find the steak in the photo?

The moral of the story is don't leave meant unattended on a grill, and defiantly don't leave a grill out side unattended. This is how house fires happen!

The Best Hike Ever

Saturday, April & I hiked Cold Mountain a 10 mile hike, 5.1 miles to the top, and then 5.1 miles back. It was awesome, in the photo you can see the peek of Cold Mtn from a web cam photo.

We started on the tail at 10:15am, and reached the top around 1:30pm, and then stopped for lunch at the Cow Pasteur on the way back down! (The cow Pasture was a level spot on the 3 mile mark where cows used to graze. how the cows got there was Beyond me) anyway we made it back to the car just before 5pm. so about 6 and 1/2 hours of a trip once you add stopping for lunch, and photos.

we got some great photos, and survived some crazy chip monks on the way, the bugs at the top we what did us in, and once we reached the top and got a few photos we turned around and headed back to a clearing for lunch. We even came across a butter fly tree, and one butter fly landed right on my shirt. check out the photos from the hike.

"It is the Best Ice Cream Ever"

It was too cool, literally! We had a Ice-cream truck go through our neighborhood tonight, and we all bought Ice Cream, who could resist. I haven’t seen an Ice cream truck since I was little in the Bahamas.

Abbey got a Dora the Explore pop and I went with big chocolate chip cookie, and April made us sit outside so we could not make a mess in the house.

The 50 mile mark

Since the YMCA Step challenge started on May 19th, I have walked over 50 miles with my stepper in the past 20 days. I would have hoped I would have done better, I would have liked to have been at 60 miles! Now, I was on vacation in the Bahamas for 10 of the days so I did slack off a little, and then made up the difference when I came back to Asheville and ran a 5K.

My new goal is to try to make up the difference, and by June 19Th (30 days from when I stared)

I want to be at or above 90 miles total. to do that I will need to cover 4 miles a day? It's good to have goals!

Asheville Chamber 5K on Firday

Yesterday, April & I ran A 5K (3.2 miles) Asheville Chamber run in about 40 mins, in 93 to 95 degree temp. It was hot! and we did not expect such a hilly course, but I did better then I thought I would.

I expected it would have taken > 45 mins, so I was happy to do it in 40 mins, with the high temp, and all the hills. Abbey was in the stands to cheer us on. We had so much fun we are talking about doing our next 5K in Weaverville July 4th, and may be working toward an, 8K and maybe a 1/2 Marathon in September.

I placed 458th and ran it in 40:40
April placed 463rd and ran it in 41:12
